Transport for London has provided an update with details of the final works at Gallows Corner, including a full weekend closure from Friday 18 September to Monday 21 September.
Following the completion of Essex & Suffolk Water’s works, TfL has reaffirmed that the entire junction, including the roundabout and flyover in all directions, is planned to reopen fully to general traffic by the end of September 2026. All diversions and traffic management associated with the works are due to be removed at that point.
TfL’s contractor, Costain, has started final reinstatement and resurfacing. Carriageway works on the A127 and A12 will be followed by final white lining and commissioning of the new pedestrian crossings.
The final phase will involve the following closures:
Thursday 17 September, 10pm to Friday 18 September, 5am
The flyover will close fully for resurfacing, with traffic diverted. The roundabout will remain partially open, with access to:
- A12 Colchester Road eastbound only.
- Straight Road in both directions.
- Main Road in both directions.
Friday 18 September, 10pm to Monday 21 September, 5am
Both the flyover and roundabout will close fully for resurfacing. No vehicle journeys will be possible through Gallows Corner in any direction.
This includes access to or from the A127 Southend Arterial Road, travel between A12 Colchester Road and A12 Eastern Avenue, and access to or from A118 Main Road through the junction. Traffic will follow diversion routes.
TfL says the works are being split into sections to minimise disruption. It will write to local residents and businesses, email customers and update its dedicated travel advice webpage.
Mrs Lopez has pressed TfL for a clear timetable to complete the remaining works following the prolonged disruption. With the water company’s work complete, responsibility for delivering the planned September reopening now rests with TfL.
