As part of her ongoing campaign to get step-free access at Hornchurch Station, Julia Lopez MP has written to London’s Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, to request an update on Transport for London’s work to assess whether Hornchurch station can be upgraded to provide step free access.
Hornchurch was named earlier this year as one of 17 stations selected to move forward to full feasibility studies under TfL’s Step Free Access programme. This came following lobbying from Julia and local conservatives, which included a petition signed by residents.
The studies will examine the technical options for installing lifts at each station, assess practical considerations on site and determine the likely costs of the work.
In her letter, Mrs Lopez highlights the strong level of public interest locally, with many residents contacting her about accessibility issues on the District line. She has asked the Deputy Mayor to confirm whether feasibility studies at Hornchurch have begun and, if not, when TfL expects this work to start.
Mrs Lopez has also sought an update on TfL’s discussions with Havering Council about identifying potential third party funding to support any future scheme. While the feasibility work is funded by TfL, the Mayor’s office has previously indicated that progress to delivery will depend on the availability of wider financial contributions.
Mrs Lopez said:
“This is an important issue for many local residents who depend on step free routes for everyday journeys. I welcome the Mayor’s decision to include Hornchurch in the latest round of feasibility studies, but people now want to understand what progress is being made and how soon assessments will take place. I have asked the Deputy Mayor for clarity on the timetable and for reassurance that funding options with the council and other partners are being fully explored.”
Further updates will be provided in due course.
