Julia Lopez MP has met Alison McGovern, Minister for Local Government, to raise fresh concerns on behalf of Havering Council about the impact of the Government’s recent local authority funding settlement.
The meeting is the latest in a long line of representations by Julia on the need for fairer and more sustainable funding for Havering, which continues to face significant financial pressures despite the Government’s new funding formula and settlement for local Councils.
During the discussion, Julia set out concerns that the overall settlement remains insufficient, with increases beyond the first year largely covering inflation rather than providing meaningful additional funding.
She highlighted that Havering Council is expected to remain in a deficit even after the uplift, placing ongoing strain on frontline services.
Julia also raised concerns about the transition to the new funding settlement, warning that delaying full implementation risks solidifying Havering’s deficit and forcing the council to take on additional borrowing.
Julia further highlighted the challenges facing Havering as a result of cuts to local NHS funding, stressing that these decisions undermine efforts to improve neighbourhood health and place additional pressure on the Council.
In response, the Minister acknowledged the issues raised and confirmed that there would be further engagement with councils receiving Exceptional Financial Support following the final settlement.
Following the meeting, Julia said:
“I’ve been raising the alarm about Havering’s funding for many years. While any additional support is welcome, the reality is that this settlement does not resolve the structural problems facing our borough. I will continue to press ministers to ensure Havering gets a fair deal and the long-term certainty it needs to protect vital local services.”
Julia will continue to engage with ministers and officials and has committed to keeping residents updated as further information emerges.
