Julia Lopez MP has asked Travelodge to provide an updated written assurance about the intended use of its proposed hotel on Station Road in Upminster.
Mrs Lopez’s office contacted the company after constituents raised concerns about renewed speculation on local social media that the hotel could be used for asylum accommodation or another form of accommodation outside its intended purpose.
Travelodge previously responded to Mrs Lopez about the development and provided assurances concerning the proposed hotel. However, the latest correspondence asks the company to confirm clearly that there are no plans for the Upminster Travelodge to be used as asylum accommodation or similar, either now or following its opening.
The enquiry was initially directed to Travelodge’s former chief executive, who has since stepped down. Mrs Lopez’s concerns have now been forwarded to the company’s new senior leadership team for a response.
Julia said:
“Fresh speculation about the proposed Travelodge has understandably led to further questions from Upminster residents.
“Travelodge has previously provided assurances about the development, but renewed rumours have created unnecessary uncertainty. I have therefore asked the company to confirm in writing that there are no plans for the hotel to be used as asylum accommodation or for another purpose outside its intended use.
“My enquiry was initially directed to the former chief executive, who has since stepped down, but the concerns have now been passed to Travelodge’s new senior leadership team.
“Residents deserve a clear and current answer directly from the company. I will provide a further update once Travelodge has responded.”
