Julia Lopez MP visited The Crumpled Horn in Upminster on Friday 17 July to learn more about the pub’s extensive fundraising and its growing role at the heart of the local community.
During the visit, Julia met managers, Russ and Katie, and charity ambassadors from Saint Francis Hospice to discuss the pub’s year-round support for local good causes.
In 2025, The Crumpled Horn raised thousands for charities bringing their expertise in hosting fundraising events into the community. This included over £2,000 for Saint Francis Hospice at their recent Soul All-Dayer, as well as raising money through more than 40 charity quiz nights held at the pub.
The team has also worked with the Upminster branch of the Royal British Legion to sell locally designed poppy pins. Since November 2025, the initiative has raised more than £2,000.
Julia recently nominated The Crumpled Horn for recognition in the Community Pub Hero Awards, which celebrate pubs making an exceptional contribution to their communities.
The visit also provided an opportunity to hear how the pub is going from strength to strength. Russ and Katie spoke about the welcoming community atmosphere they have worked to build, with regular events bringing residents together while raising money for important causes.
Julia said:
“It was a pleasure to visit The Crumpled Horn and meet the team to hear more about the incredible fundraising taking place throughout the year.
“The figures are impressive, but what stood out most was the genuine community spirit behind everything the team does. The pub is clearly going from strength to strength as a welcoming place where people can enjoy themselves while supporting causes that matter to local residents.
“I was delighted to nominate The Crumpled Horn for a Community Pub Hero Award and hope the team receives the recognition it deserves. My thanks go to everyone at the pub, as well as its customers, fundraisers and supporters, for their generosity and commitment to our community.”
The Community Pub Hero Awards recognise pubs and their teams for their contribution to charitable causes, local initiatives and the communities they serve.
