Local Conservatives have launched a campaign to secure step-free access at Hornchurch Underground Station after Transport for London (TfL) announced that the station is one of 30 across the network being considered for potential accessibility upgrades.

TfL is expected to select just 15 of these stations to move forward to full feasibility studies later this year. Stations that can demonstrate strong local support and the potential for third-party or borough funding are more likely to be prioritised.
Residents can help show that support by signing the below petition and highlighting any instances where they, or a loved one, has been impacted by the poor accessibility of the station. The results will be submitted to TfL to help demonstrate the strength of local feeling and support the case for urgent improvements.
The campaign is being led by Hornchurch & Upminster MP Julia Lopez, London Assembly Member Keith Prince and local Conservative Association Chairman Adam Baker, who have come together to present the strongest case for Hornchurch’s inclusion in the next round of improvements.
This latest effort builds on previous work by local Conservatives to improve accessibility across the area, including Mrs Lopez’s long-running campaign to make platform 6 at Upminster Station step-free. Before the 2024 General Election, she secured funding from the previous Conservative government for that project and continues to press the new Labour Government to deliver on it after funding got frozen.
Speaking about the campaign, Julia said:
“I have asked TfL and the Mayor for upgrades to Hornchurch Station many times on residents’ behalf over the years. But the upkeep of Outer London’s stations never seems to be a priority. I am glad finally to see at least the shortlisting of Hornchurch for step-free access and want to make sure we secure the cash.
"We want Hornchurch station to be accessible to everyone in our community, and this is a real opportunity. However, TfL have made clear that schemes which can generate financial support will go further. The local Conservative team is on the case, but we need residents’ help by sharing their experiences and showing their support.”
Chairman of Hornchurch & Upminster Conservative Association, Adam Barker commented:
"Over 4,000 people use Hornchurch Station each day, that is why local Conservatives are committed to improving our local transport services and securing step-free access will have a positive impact for local people."
Keith Prince AM added:
“Too often outer London – and particularly Havering – gets the thin edge of the wedge on transport improvements. Step-free access opens up the Tube to many residents who otherwise struggle to use it. It is past time that Hornchurch station is made step-free.”
In light of TfL’s comments that stations with local authority support stand a higher chance of success, Mrs Lopez has written to the Leader of Havering Council urging the borough to support the campaign for step-free access at Hornchurch.
