Julia Lopez, Member of Parliament for Hornchurch and Upminster, has written to the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to request guidance on potential business rates relief for local firms affected by the ongoing works at Gallows Corner.
The Gallows Corner flyover is undergoing major replacement works as part of a £60 million investment by the Department for Transport. While the improvements are designed to secure the long-term resilience of this critical junction, the temporary closure of the route to most vehicles, with some businesses reporting major disruption to their trade.
In her letter to the VOA, Mrs Lopez highlighted the impact on businesses in retail and trading estates located near the works. She pointed to reports of serious traffic congestion, delays, and difficulty accessing premises, all of which have hampered the ability of local firms to operate. These challenges have been further exacerbated by concurrent water utility works affecting key access routes.
“Local businesses, particularly those who are in nearby retail and trading estates, are bearing the brunt.”
Said Julia.
“Staff, customers and deliveries are all affected, and access for some – especially along the eastbound A127 – has been further hampered by simultaneous water utility works.”
Mrs Lopez has already raised the issue with the Deputy Mayor of London for Transport and senior members of the London Borough of Havering, urging coordinated support for affected traders.
The flyover works are expected to last for approximately ten weeks. Julia is encouraging any business experiencing difficulties to apply for relief as soon as possible.
