From crafting glass for landmark buildings to helping restore the iconic Big Ben, the Harold Wood business Firman Glass has left its mark on some of the world’s most recognisable structures. Last Friday, Julia Lopez MP visited the firm to celebrate its 50th anniversary and see the extraordinary work happening behind the scenes.
Firman Glass is a family-run firm headed by Jody Hodgson and is recognised as a national leader in its field.
The company employs more than 50 people across several workshops at its Harold Wood site and has delivered specialist glass for projects across the world, including in Japan and the United States.
Most recently, Firman Glass supplied the glazing used in the refurbishment of Big Ben. That project went on to win a RIBA award and demonstrated the firm’s technical excellence and reputation for high-quality work.
Speaking after the visit, Julia said:
“Firman Glass is a brilliant example of the strength and creativity found in our local business community. From its base on a humble Harold Wood trading estate, it has decked out everything from high-end homes to Big Ben’s clock tower. They have even built specialist testing facilities for Formula One. The team’s work is breathtakingly beautiful as well as incredibly high spec, and everyone in Havering should feel proud that these specialist craftsmen hail from the borough.
“This is a company that has grown from a family enterprise into a major specialist manufacturer with an international reputation.
“It provides high-quality jobs right in the heart of Harold Wood and plays an important role in our local economy.
“I want to congratulate Jody and the whole team on reaching their 50-year milestone and thank them for everything they contribute to our area.”
Julia’s visit formed part of her wider programme of engagement with local employers ahead of Small Business Saturday. She is continuing to champion the role that long-standing firms like Firman Glass play in supporting economic growth, apprenticeships and local prosperity.
