Julia Lopez MP has welcomed further progress on plans for a new Accident and Emergency department at Queen’s Hospital following a meeting with the Trust’s new Interim Chief Executive, Fiona Wheeler.

Mrs Lopez met Ms Wheeler last week to discuss several issues regularly raised with her by residents, including pressure on the hospital’s A&E department, waiting lists and maternity services.

A key part of the meeting focused on the Trust’s plans for a new A&E at Queen’s Hospital.

The department continues to operate under significant pressure, with demand far exceeding the level it was originally designed to manage. Mrs Lopez has repeatedly pressed Ministers and NHS leaders to support the hospital’s plans for a modern new emergency department capable of meeting local demand.

The Trust is now seeking £42 million for the project. Its final business case is expected to be considered by the Trust Board at the end of July before progressing through the next stages of approval.

The Trust remains confident that the scheme will be approved, with construction potentially beginning in November or December 2026, around the 20th anniversary of Queen’s Hospital.

Mrs Lopez said:

“Securing a new A&E for Queen’s remains one of my biggest local priorities.

“The current department is under enormous pressure and residents need a modern facility that is properly equipped to cope with the level of demand it now faces.

“I was pleased to hear that the Trust remains confident about the project and that the final business case is moving forward. I will continue pressing Ministers and NHS leaders to make sure the funding is secured and the scheme is delivered.”
