Earlier today, Julia quizzed the Government on the issue of taxing free drugs provided to cancer patients.
She commented:
We want the new cancer strategy to work.
But patients won't get the best treatments if government policy makes it unviable to launch drugs in the UK.
That’s why today - just before a jaw-dropping PMQs - I alerted the Science Secretary that HMRC has begun taxing some medicines delivered free of charge. Trials are being pulled and access to critical drugs stopped as a result.
That’s a disaster for patients, our life sciences sector and Labour’s cancer strategy.
As usual, rather than engage, the Minister looked at me like I’d just shot her dog and then gave waffly platitudes.
For affected patients, a better answer would’ve been simple:
“I wasn’t aware of this. I’ll fix it immediately.”
